Platforming emerging composers and broadening brass ensemble repertoire is a priority for our ensemble. To help bring brass ensemble into the 21st century with uniquely Los Angeles flair, we're presenting Next Up, a concert of 10 world premieres for brass.
This free concert is on February 10th, 2024 at 7:00 PM.

LAB-A has chosen 10 composers from across Los Angeles to create new works for brass ensemble to premiere at this concert. This is the first time any of this music has ever been performed. LAB-A is proud to present the music of these incredibly talented and hard-working composers.

This concert is intended to spotlight emerging composers as they build their musical careers in Los Angeles, and foster artistic collaboration between composers and brass musicians.
We believe that as students, freelancers and performers, we're responsible for ensuring the rich and vibrant future of brass performance. This concert is an investment in our musicians, these incredible composers, and the accessibility of new music to Los Angeles audiences.
We define "emerging composers" as composers who are currently studying at the graduate level, have graduated from collegiate studies in the last 5 years, or are between the ages of 22 and 30.
Selected composers have the opportunity to:
Workshop their piece with the ensemble in real time.
Have their work performed in a public venue with those of other emerging composers.
Receive a high-quality recording of the work from the performance for their portfolio.
Conduct their work, if desired.
Participate in a composer-musician roundtable event and engage in peer feedback with other selected composers.
As artists, we believe in paying artists fairly for their labor! However, we will not have more than a small prize for each composer for this inaugural season. LAB-A is a young organization (currently filing for non-profit status) and projects are funded personally by our leadership team and partial sponsorships from local music businesses. We are working to secure increased funding for next season's Next Up.
