Since its inception in 2022, LAB-A’s membership has grown from 20 to approximately 180 post-graduate brass musicians and percussionists hailing from over 15 major universities in the greater L.A. area.
Interested musicians currently in graduate studies or within five years of graduation from collegiate musical studies sign up to play, forming an ensemble of 35-40 members. Three to four rehearsals take place on Sunday mornings leading up to each concert, which is hosted in a different venue around Los Angeles each cycle. We perform 4 concerts per season.
Musicians are also able to attend masterclasses and seminars hosted by LAB-A, where notable professionals come in to share their expertise. Our vision is to bridge the gap between the collegiate and professional artistic worlds, and we’re proud to cultivate a space where emerging brass professionals can expand as artists, organizers, and people.
New music is at the core of our ensemble, and we’ve commissioned over 35 new works and arrangements from living L.A.-based composers over the last 3 seasons. We consciously expand the brass ensemble repertoire and platform non-dominant voices, including female, queer and BIPOC artists, culminating in our annual new music concert, Next Up!
LAB-A serves the vibrant community of professional instrumentalists, composers, music lovers and other creatives here in Los Angeles through our creative programming and performances. We have partnered with Friends of Music at Pasadena Presbyterian Church, the University of Southern California, and the Long Beach Symphony to present premieres of works by emerging and established composers.
Are you an emerging brass musician looking for a space to meet, play and collaborate? Join us for a concert!
